Diversified southwest Alabama company Mid Star Timber Harvesting, Inc., just had its biggest year yet for capital expenditures, according to its owner, Mitchell Presley. With the addition of two new operations last year—a third chipping crew and a second trucking outfit—the company invested over $2 million in 2015. Partnered with his wife Wanda, Mitchell, 54, started Mid Star in 1999, and 17 years later they own three companies: Mid Star Timber, which includes seven harvesting crews—four roundwood, three chipping—as well as procurement and support; Mid-Star Wood Haulers, the transportation component for the timber side; and their most recent baby, Mid Star Express, the cross-country trucking company they started last year. The business also includes its own company fueling station and a road building crew.
