Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Managing Editor David Abbott travels to Jonesboro, Louisiana to visit DG&E Logging, Inc. The calendar said January, but Mother Nature was in more of an April mood. It was warm, and wet. In the woods with one of his seven logging and chipping crews, David Greer was on the lookout for snakes and mosquitoes, and when he got in his truck, he had to roll down a window and turn on the air conditioner. Greer, 35, is the owner of DG&E Logging, Inc. The letters stand for David Greer and Elizabeth, his 13-year-old daughter. He’s a third generation logger, but that didn’t mean he was able to slip right into the boots filled by his grandfather and father. By the time he came of age, there was no family business for him to join. Greer had learned to run a skidder for his uncle by the age of 8, but when he was 13, his father lost both of his legs due to complications caused by diabetes. He didn’t let that stop him.
