Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Managing Editor David Abbott travels to Kirby, Arkansas to visit Dustin Young Logging, Inc. When Southern Loggin’ Times caught up with Dustin Young Logging, Inc., in early October, southwest Arkansas had gone from one weather extreme to another. The spring saw some of the most rain areas have seen; the fall brought talk of a record drought. While South Carolina was experiencing record floods, Arkansas was bone dry. The dust was so heavy in the woods that it was almost as bad as a thick layer of mud on the ground, and as slick as water. Boots sank down into it several inches deep with each step. Operators had to diligently blow air filters out every day, and take care with trucks and machines not to damage rear ends when tires started sliding in thin dirt. “It’s been a couple months since we’ve had a good dust settler,” according to owner Dustin Young, 30.
