Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Associate Editor Jay Donnell visits Church Hill Logging located in Preston, Georgia. One word that quickly comes to mind when describing Jimmy Bearden, Sr. of Church Hill Logging is “experienced.” Make that two words: “experienced and skilled.” About a decade before Jimmy was born, his grandfather came to Webster County in the 1930s and started a sawmill operation. His father, Clarence Roland Bearden, bought the sawmill operation in the 1940s and around 1949 bought his first pulpwood truck and used a cross cut saw to cut timber and loaded pulpwood by hand. Jimmy got into the timber industry in 1959 when he started working at Pineland Pulp Wood Company in Milner, Ga. That’s where he learned to operate a pulpwood yard and later he was assigned to train others how to operate one.
