Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Managing Editor David Abbott, along with Executive Director of the Virginia Loggers Association Ron Jenkins, has the opportunity to visit Dunivan Logging in Columbia, Virginia. Dunivan Logging has been harvesting timber in central Virginia for more than half a century. Clan patriarch Howard Dunivan, Sr., was just 22 when he started making sawdust. His father had started the family’s first sawmill in Cumberland, feeding it with logs skidded by mules, and Howard recalls he often saw his dad carry logs on his shoulders practically as big as those handled by the mules. Ever since then, it seems, wood has run through the Dunivan family blood. Now 80, Howard Sr. still loves going to the woods, but he has relinquished the burden of decision-making to his only son, Howard, Jr., 51. That doesn’t mean the elder statesman isn’t still involved—far from it.
