Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Associate Editor Jessica Johnson visits North Bay Timber located in Southport, Florida. Tracy Richardson, 50, didn’t grow up in logging. In fact, it was just the opposite. Instead of growing up in the woods he grew up on the water. He and his brother Stanley used to run a commercial fishing boat running from Louisiana to Apalachicola. It is their first love. But when the fishing industry started changing in the mid-1990s, they were pushed out. So in 1995, the brothers found a new love: logging. Their cousin was a logger, so when they found themselves needing to find something new, logging proved a surprisingly natural fit. “It kind of goes together,” Richardson explains. “In the commercial fishing industry you’re out in the water, you’re not dealing with the public as much, you’re kind of on your own. When you’re logging you’re out here in the woods, on your own, not dealing with the public.”
