Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Managing Editor David Abbott visits Red Bay, Alabama’s Liles Logging. Gary “Tex” Liles, 73, is the owner of Liles Logging, which operates in the far northwest corner of Alabama, between the Tennessee and Mississippi borders. In fact, while Liles cuts most of his stumpage in Alabama, he hauls it to Tennessee and buys his equipment in Mississippi. It’s hilly country, but full of pine, so Liles Logging does a lot of thinning. To handle that thinning, Liles started running a 2017 Del Fab DF703 Phoenix three-wheel cutter just over a year ago. “I love it,” he says. “I had a few issues at the very start, because they left some hydraulic lines a little loose and it took a little while to get that solved, but after we did that, we’ve had no problems with it. I like the machine.” A three-wheel cutter is nothing new to Liles; in fact, that’s all he’s ever run.
