Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Associate Editor Jessica Johnson has the opportunity to visit Brett McHenry Logging, LLC in Wilson, North Carolina. Brett McHenry, 29, doesn’t come from a traditional logging background. Growing up, his father sold Kenworth trucks, servicing many loggers near the family home in Wilson, NC, 40 miles east of Raleigh, where his mother worked as a flight attendant. He became fascinated with the career path after tagging along with his father on weekends and in the summers to call on customers and deliver new haul trucks. So when he graduated high school, he figured the best way into the business would be with a forestry degree. After graduating from Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, McHenry went to work for Canal Wood in New Bern, buying timber for other loggers—biding his time in a way, learning even more about being a logger.
