Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Associate Editor Jessica Johnson visits Gray Logging, LLC located in Madison, Florida. Logger Jerry Gray’s story isn’t unlike most. His Daddy started logging alongside his Uncle James for many years in different parts of south Georgia and north Florida before moving to New Mexico to log. The Southern boys didn’t like the snow as much as they thought they might, and moved back to north Florida after a while. In 1971 Gray Logging, LLC was started with, what Gray describes as, a bunch of wore out equipment, just getting a handful of loads a day. “Nothing like it is now,” he says, chuckling. Gray, 54, entered the business right out of high school, after deciding not to play football at Florida State University. He ran the loader for 23 years. In 2001, the elder Gray decided it was time to retire, and handed things off to his son, though he still regularly runs the bulldozer and carries parts to the woods when needed.
