Southern Loggin’ Time magazine Associate Editor Jay Donnell travels to Ruther Glen, Virginia to visit JH Knighton Lumber Company. When Joseph Knighton was running a portable sawmill in 1969 he probably never envisioned how much his business would grow before he passed away, and after. Today, his sons, David and Tim, and daughter Sandra, own the company and run three crews as well as a small sawmill. David’s son, Joe, started working full time last summer. “It started out as a portable ground mill with horses and mules,” David says. “I can remember going to the mill with him on the weekends to feed the horses and mules.” As Joseph’s mill got bigger, finding larger tracts of timber that would justify moving a mill into became few and far between. That’s when he decided to start a permanent location in Ruther Glen.
