Southern Loggin’ Times magazine Associate Editor Jay Donnell visits Lewis Logging located in Chester, South Carolina. Butch Lewis is a huge Tennessee Volunteers football fan. Expectations are high for the team this season and Lewis hopes that “the big orange” lives up to them. Expectations are even higher for his logging business, but unlike Tennessee football, Lewis has control over what kind of season his logging team has. When Lewis started Lewis Logging in 1984 the first pieces of equipment he purchased were a 170 Franklin feller-buncher and a Prentice loader. Needless to say, he has seen equipment change drastically and costs rise dramatically. “There weren’t any Husqvarna chain saws when I started out,” Lewis remembers. “Those didn’t come out until the late 70s or early 80s.”
