Southern Loggin’ Times Contributing Editor May Donnell visits Smith Brothers Logging in Rome, Georgia. Northwestern Georgia logger Travis Smith has little time for bream fishing these days. Or anything else not tied to work or family. When SLT visited, he had one daughter about to get married in his front yard, another daughter expecting a first grandchild, and an adopted daughter waiting back in the impoverished West African country of Ghana to come home. She will join the family when all the paperwork is finally completed to become the third child the Smiths have adopted from the same area. Mercy-Brian is her name and she will make child number 10 for Travis and his wife, Deborah. When he’s not wrapped up in family concerns, Smith, 55, runs a successful business full time with his younger brother, Keith. It’s a good thing he has Keith to help shoulder the load of two crews and plenty of work on the docket.
