Southern Loggin’ Times Associate Editor David Abbott travels to Laurens, South Carolina to spend some time with Walker and Walker Logging, LLC. Punxsutawney Phil was wrong. In fact, in late March, there was a tongue-in-cheek report that the state of Ohio was planning to sue the groundhog for its grossly inaccurate prediction of an early spring. It was the day after that report was published when Southern Loggin’ Times paid a visit to the woods with brothers Robert and Billy Walker, owners and equal partners in Walker and Walker Logging, LLC. A week past the first official day of spring, winter was reluctant to let go; a biting wind accentuated a 47-degree high temperature at noon. Robert, 60, and Billy, 55, had to choose between two options when it came their time to follow the family business nearly 40 years ago. Their father was primarily a farmer who only logged a little in the winters. “He just had a small outfit, nothing like what we do now,” Robert recalls.
