Southern Loggin’ Times Associate Editor Jessica Johnson has the opportunity to visit Mehalic Logging, Inc. in Gurdon, Arkansas. Owner Steve Mehalic has an infectious laugh. The kind that when you hear it you can’t just help but laugh along with it. With his sense of humor, that infectious laugh and a strong camaraderie among his crew, composed of his father, brother, and just two others (non family members), Mehalic creates an easy working environment, even if it means the actual work isn’t easy. It’s been six or seven years, Mehalic estimates, since the job site has seen a reportable accident. A mix of good communication, seasoned woods workers and weekly safety meetings also help Mehalic keep a safe working environment.
